This might seem like an untimely comic, but I live in Halifax, and this is typical weather for late March/early April. Seriously. We had snow last weekend. SIIIIGH.
Anyway. I've often wondered about the effect of crappy weather on crime statistics. I mean, if I was a burgeoning supervillain, intent on committing my first crime, and I looked out the window and saw snow coming down hard, I might wait for spring to start my villainy.
Unless you're Mr Freeze or some other cold-inducing villain...
ReplyDeleteActually cold icy weather would be a perfect time to commit crimes as law enforcement would have some difficulties finding you. Of course, the chance YOU get into an accident is increased as well, so it's a matter of whether the odds of having an accident are greater than of escaping with the loot. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt would be the perfect time for a Yeti invasion.
ReplyDeleteI think we're missing the big picture here and that's namely that a Superhero Scarf could quite possibly be the coolest costume accessory EVER!! That is all...
ReplyDeleteI live in Halifax too, but you know... at least it isn't Calgary, they just got a foot a couple of days ago.
ReplyDeleteHalifax isn't too bad during the winter (at least my first one here anyway).
Ooh, cool snow effects! Speaking of winter crime, apparently there's an uptick in stabbings when it's cold, since a lot of arguments that end that way start in kitchens, where knives are usually handy. Go figure.
ReplyDelete@Sean & FEH:
ReplyDeleteWhere is it NOT snowing in Canada right now?!?!?! It rained for about 10 minutes in Calgary last week on my drive home, and I've never been so happy in my life! (PS It's gonna snow again on Saturday)
What Ziggy said! I love it :-)
ReplyDelete"Of course, the chance YOU get into an accident is increased as well, so it's a matter of whether the odds of having an accident are greater than of escaping with the loot. ;) "
ReplyDeleteThere was a video doing the rounds a few weeks back showing an armed robber trying to escape a bunch of encircling cops by using a hostage as a human shield. He slipped on ice and she was able to escape. He got ventilated.
Oh, and the star on that scarf looks a bit Soviet... is this Halifax or Siberia?
ReplyDeleteThe winter costume is super-awesome! I was thinking the same thing about the scarf (looking sovietish) but it's way cool, and not weather inappropriate.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a fight against a villain in the snow could be graphically really cool, with two dark silhouettes against all that white and static.
Everyone likes Superhero Girl's scarf! Huzzah! Well, if this comic thing doesn't work out, guess I can start designing clothing. Hm, no.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about it, winter is something they never really cover in superhero comics. I can't remember ever seeing Spider-man swinging through a snowy New York.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as someone who lives in Winnipeg, it certainly doesn't *seem* like cold weather reduces crime. :/
ReplyDeleteCorey>> Yeah, I've noticed that. Superheroes seem to live in a world of perpetual summer. Makes sense for the X-Men, who live in San Fran, but New York has crappy winters, just like Canada.
ReplyDeleteI love how she's so practical. Apart from the going out patrolling in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the Soviet Union lived where it is cold most of the time, and lets face they were pretty bad.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, John Romita Sr. drew Spiderman swinging about the city in rain and snow. Spiderman issue #48 has a heavy snowfall, if fact, throughout the issue. The splash page is a classic.
ReplyDeleteAnd here's a link to Spidey in the snow.

Actually, there is a correlation between crime rates and heat....
ReplyDeletePeople get crime-y when it's hot out? I can believe that.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't know she's a superhero....it just looks as though she's contemplating suicide....on a cold snowy day.
