Superhero Girl 010

I'm always impressed superheroes seem to find audiences that believe they're superheroes. Y'know, "There, in the sky! It's Super-whomever!" I guess they look the part, with the tights and the muscles and good looks. I'm pretty envious of anyone who looks like they're comfortable in their hot, sexy superhero skin. I can't imagine what it'd be like to actually work in a field where looks matter. Y'know, like politics or hand-modelling. It's a-okay to be ugly and fat when you're a cartoonist! (Thank God.) Also to work in your pyjamas. I like that.

  1. Wait, one needs a tragedy in one's past that makes one want to be a superhero?

So, does this mean that Wonder Woman isn't a real superhero either? After all, she never had any great tragedy that inspired her to become a superheroine, did she? Princess Diana competed with her fellow Amazons for the chance to become Wonder Woman, and she won! So, where's the tragedy in that origin?

  5. Tudza>> yes, that would be my response too.

Anonymous>> It's kind of sad that there aren't more superhero origins like Wonder Woman's. Or even Superman's. While he had the tragedy of Krypton in his past, he still became Superman out of a desire to do good and create a better world. It's been my observation that many many superheroes seem to come out of a much darker place, having something really bad happen to them and needing to fix what they feel is a corrupt society. It's pretty pessimistic.

  9. I'm with the other people who think this annoying guy has the potential to be her super-nemesis. The Evil Snarky-Lad or something like that?

As for tragic origins, there are still a lot of heroes out there without them. Look at Green Lantern, The Flash, Green Arrow... none of them really have what you'd call tragic origins. I think they're more a modern phenomenon, because there was a greater desire for "darker" characters.

  13. Taking things from a different angle, wouldn't this snarky guy be too obvious of a choice for an arch-villain? Maybe he's just giving her the business. That's how some people flirt anyway by giving the other person tons of s***. Frequently a nemesis in contemporary stories are someone who was once a friend, colleague or ally who went their separate way or was parted because they both wanted to achieve the same end using different techniques.
