Superhero Girl Status

Hey guys, wanted to make a post about Superhero Girl's status, as we're approaching June and people have been wondering when the comic will return. Some things have changed during the comic's hiatus, the biggest being I've decided to quit having the comic published by The Coast. Having Superhero Girl published in a weekly newspaper was what initially got the comic going, and forced me to deal with the deadlines necessary to keep it running consistently, but my highly pressurized schedule means I can't commit to that schedule any more.

I've also grown to realize that having a comic like Superhero Girl in a weekly newspaper is probably not the best way to read it. I've had people complain that they can't follow the storylines in the newspaper because they're reading weekly (as opposed to daily), and of course the Superhero Girl comic archive is not available to them in the newspaper. I like doing stand alone SHG comics, but I also like doing storylines and developing a cast of characters, and it's likely the latter will be more common as the comic goes along, because I like writing character based jokes and Kevin is too much fun to not make a reoccurring character. I've decided to take the comic online only, which is where I feel its real home is anyway. I've always received much more feedback and apparent enjoyment from online readers than I have from those who read SHG in the newspaper and I think the internet is where it belongs.

So Superhero Girl will return, in an online incarnation ... eventually. Unfortunately, it will not be June. I'm currently drawing a graphic novel for my publisher First Second, and the deadline for that comic is June 15. I have a MASSIVE amount of work to get done on that comic, and no time to spare for online comics, sadly. Provided I meet my deadline (god I hope I do) I'm attending two conventions at the end of June, the American Library Association Annual in California (eep, jetlag!) and Animaritime in Moncton, New Brunswick. So no SHG in June, sorry! I'm aiming for July for her return, and I hoping to have a proper website for her too, with a proper archive and everything. I'll announce any further news to this website, so keep an eye open here.

Anyway, thanks so much to everyone who's enjoyed the comic, I hope to have you back in July when my schedule is a little less insane, and thanks to The Coast for providing a home for Superhero Girl these past two years. It's been swell.

See you in July!

  3. Sad that it can't return in June, but I agree with what Cerulean Bill said "SHG is well worth waiting for".

  7. +1'ing all the "Worth the wait" comments. Also, I was temporarily excited that you were going to be at a convention here in California! ...and then I saw it was in Anaheim, on the other end of the state from me. Oh well, someday I'll get to meet you at a con, and give you giddy thanks as I buy your merch.

  19. Are you going for a full reboot here, or are you going to just start doing storylines and want to plot them out before drawing them? (It doesn't matter which you do. I'm just curious. ^^)

    You take care :)

    1. Oh, no, nothing's going to change about the comic. I just want the option to do stories along side the gag strips. :) It's just whenever I do a story (like when SHG fought an evil version of herself) people reading the comic in the paper can't follow it due to the week delay and lack of an archive.

  20. Well, I'll definitely be there, too! Take your time and catch up. We'd rather have a comic that you were able to make really well at your leisure than a slapped-together one you had to rush through while stressed out. Insuring the good quality of comics is as important as meeting deadlines, I think.

  30. Sorry, Anon, but "updates in July" doesn't mean July 1st. I have a huge deadline on July 15th (my graphic novel is due to my publisher) so updates will resume after then.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Or July 3rd. Whichever.

Okay, so revised countdown to Superhero Girl's return—Fifteen more days.

  32. All sounds like good news to me. Look forward to the return of SHG.

  33. Well, here it is—the Tuesday after July 15th and Superhero Girl is nowhere to be found. Will she be returning soon? Or will crime and super villainy continue to run rampant through the streets of her fair city?

  34. I've just read all through the Superhero girl comics, I think they're fantastic work. Lovely art with clever and witty plotlines and punchlines.

If you do more that'd be just swell :)

  35. When was the funeral? Where do I send the flowers?

  36. Dropping by here to say that I'm a fan of your work! I first read Brain Camp at our local library and then found out about your comic with First Second books (I love the books they've published), found this comic, and a couple of days back, found one copy of Friends with Boys at the Barnes and Noble and just had to haz eet.

I hope you get some print versions of this comic up for purchase online! I'm getting a copy if it does! :)

  37. Well, this is it. Not just the last Tuesday of July—but the last day of July altogether!

    1. Back off, anon. You see, there's this thing called, life. It often surprises you and places obsticles in your pathway to keep you from doing things. Maybe, Mrs. Hicks has a few of these in her path of life right now that are keeping her from doing Superhero Girl. While Mrs. Hicks has tried to give us a date when she will come back, it's not always possible to fulfill these things because this is just a free, online comic that doesn't generally bring in money. Mrs. Hicks may be doing things that generate money and those, as they should, take priority over this. So, I repeat, BACK OFF ANON.

    2. Okay, fine, I'll "back off" as you say.

I didn't think I was putting Mrs. Hicks under any kind of pressure anyway—I thought I was just expressing my excitement at the return of Superhero Girl!

But you're right, Mrs. Hicks does have to make a living, and as popular as she is, Superhero Girl, as a free webcomic just doesn't pay the bills.

    3. Anon, let me put it this way: I don't enjoy remarks about the update schedule, or lack thereof, and they really don't help. I miss doing Superhero Girl too, but right now I'm swamped with deadlines for paying work, and cannot prioritize Superhero Girl, much as I would like to. I get that you're eager for more comics, but the updates will come when they come. I've been working 6 days a week sometimes for over 10 hours a day since March 2011, without any kind of vacation ... I do not slack when it comes to my work.

So yeah, I know you don't mean to be mean, but comments about the update schedule only serve to make me feel bad. :(

    4. It was nice reading SHG. Sad to see it go.

  38. don't feel bad ...you work is great...we alll know that the bills come first and congradulations on lots work. do we miss the GIRL? sure we do but most likly not as much as you. come back when you can. i do want to tell you this I have read the comic since the beginnning.....every week then i decided i wanted a copy of the Superhero Girl book....i called the comic shop in your town and they mailed me one....OK ...cost of the call-I'm from the USA plus cost of shipping-again i am from the USA...plus cost of the book added to three times the cost....THANKS I LOVED IT and the little drawing in the front cover....sinice then i have gotten two other books from book store here....keep up the good work and send Superhero Girl over and punch Anon in the nose....your real worse enemy...deadlines....take care hope to see her back soon....ronaldj

    1. The way that cat is looking at it, practically drooling over it, I'd say tuna fish.

    2. Well, she had a cheese sandwich in an earlier comic, but yeah, since the cat's so into it, probably tuna. ;)
